Oakland Airport (IATA: OAK, ICAO: KOAK, FAA LID: OAK), officially known as Oakland International Airport, is located approximately 10 miles (16 km) south of downtown Oakland and adjacent to the city limits of San Leandro in Alameda County and across the San Francisco Bay from San Francisco.

The airport has more than 100 daily flights to cities throughout North America and some parts of Europe and Asia. It handles domestic and international travelers departing from Northern California to several parts of the world.

It also serves as a regional cargo hub for the entire Bay Area, connecting business centers such as San Francisco, Silicon Valley, and Los Angeles with national and international destinations around the globe.

The airport covers 2,600 acres (1,100 ha) and sits in an elevated location about 9 feet or 3 meters above sea level at 37° 43′ 17″ N and 122° 13′ 15″ W. It has two terminals, four runways, and 32 gates.

Arrivals, Departures and Airlines at Oakland International Airport

History of Oakland International Airport

Oakland International Airport is one of the earliest modern airports in the world. In 1925, the City of Oakland purchased land east of the city limits for a new airport. In September 1927, it was dedicated by Charles Lindbergh.

The airport also played a role in aviation history. It was the departing point of historic flights of Charles Kingsford Smith from Oakland-Australia in 1928 and Amelia Earhart, the first female aviator to fly solo across the Atlantic Ocean in 1937.

Earhart was never to return and was declared dead in 1939.

In December 1927, Boeing Air Transport (United Airlines today) began flying passengers to Oakland. It was followed by Trans World Airlines (American Airlines from 2001) in 1932.

During WWII, the Armed Forces of the United States temporarily took over Oakland Airport for military operations to the Pacific. At the height of the Vietnam War in the 1950s and 1960s, OAK transported military passengers and cargo to Southeast Asia and other parts of the world.

In the 1970s, operations at OAK were normalized and passengers started flying again.

Oakland International Airport is the fifth busiest airport in California, handling 6.7 million passengers as of 2018.

The four other busiest airports in California in the same period are Los Angeles International Airport (42.6 million), San Francisco International Airport (27.8 million), San Diego International Airport (12.1 million), and San Jose International Airport (7 million).

In 2020, Southwest Airlines alone had flown more than 3 million passengers in and out of Oakland International Airport—or some 85% of total passengers. It is also home to Alaska Airlines, Allegiant Air, Azores Airlines, Volaris, Delta Air Lines, Hawaiian Airlines, JSX, Spirit Airlines, and Contour Airlines.

The airport’s busiest domestic routes include Las Vegas, Nevada, Phoenix–Sky Harbor, Arizona, Los Angeles, California, Denver, Colorado, Seattle/Tacoma, Washington, San Diego, California, Orange County, California, Salt Lake City, Utah, Honolulu, Hawaii, and Portland, Oregon.

OAK is responsible for bringing in millions of dollars of economic activity to the city’s almost half a million residents. It also plays a vital part in Oakland's infrastructure, tourism, and service industry.

The airport’s largest employers include Southwest Airlines, FedEx, Rolls Royce Engine Services, and UPS. Major cargo carriers FedEx Express and UPS operate at OAK with about 40 flights daily.
